Isn't this whole 'not sanctioning a release clause' thing a distinction between...

a) The legally-enforcable kind where the clause fee has to be paid by the PLAYER to their own club (effectively buying themselves out of their contract). In practice he would receive said money from the buying club first...BUT because this would be subject to income tax - thereby costing the club as much as 50% more than the publicised figure! - no one actually ever wants to do this.

and

b) What usually happens in that the aforementioned release clause isn't *actually* activated, but the selling club simply accepts the same figure from the buying club on the basis that it makes no difference to them. Or they can choose not to accept it, of course.

As said before, I do <3 Torres in a largely inexplicable way...but if at any point his place in the squad was standing in the way of, for example, Mandzukic joining Chelsea then I'd be all like wewishyouwellinallyourfutureendeavoursthankyougoodbye.

Liverpool will pay up to 10m for Divock Origi, also loaning him back immediately to Lille.

Shaqiri is close to agreeing a 5-year, 95,000/week deal with Liverpool with the fee expected to be somewhere in the region of 15m.

Alexis Sanchez is close to a move to Arsenal.
