Southampton owner Katharina Liebherr is expected to install herself as chairman with Nicola Cortese set to leave imminently.

Cortese tendered his formal resignation in the autumn and is already serving the notice period on his contract.

Southampton declined to comment when contacted by the BBC, but the position of manager Mauricio Pochettino now looks increasingly uncertain.

Cortese, 45, disagrees with Liebherr's wish to see the club's immediate sale.

It has, however, emerged that the former Swiss banker submitted his formal resignation from the club almost three months ago and has been serving the remainder of his contract ever since.

At the time, Southampton were third in the Premier League table and with communication between the parties now at a standstill, there appears no way back.

Cortese considered his position in May as he attempted to clarify the future position of the club with Liebherr. He eventually decided to stay after receiving the necessary assurances.

He has at times been a figure that has polarised opinion at St Mary's but has seen Southampton climb from League One to the top flight in less than four years.

The Daily Express are saying Rooney is out of Sunday's game at Chelsea, and is only 50-50 for the CoC semi final 2nd leg on Wednesday.

AFAIK, yes. 2 to 6 weeks was quoted last week, but realistically it's closer to 2 than 6.

No. Fellaini has the wrist problem. He's having/had an operation because he was carrying another injury, so it made sense to do it now.

Southampton/Sunderlan's turning into a bit of a good game. Southampton just went two up, and Borini's pulled one back. Superb cross from Adam Johnson and a nice finish from Borini.

First 20 minutes was one of the most one sided spells I've ever seen, Southampton were all over Sunderland.

Just saw Rodriquez's goal, which was great, despite the poor defending. I really think he needs to go to Brazil this summer, especially ahead of the likes of Defoe.

Couple of nasty injuries for Southampton there. Gaston Ramirez and Lovren both needed stretchers after going down in the same passage of play.

That was pretty horrible, especially the Ramirez one. Hope both players are okay. Not happy that Southampton have mucked up my accy before we even got to the 3pm kick offs.
