Decent haul for Montreal. I also think its a good move for the Preds. Defence is their strength, and now its even stronger. Pair Gill with someone mobile like Ellis.

Value for UFA defensemen is weird right now - Philly's payment for Grossman definitely set the bar higher than normal.

Montreal still hedged their bets with Geoffrion, as the Preds only get the 5th round pick if he plays 40 or more next season with the Habs. Geoffrion becomes not only the first fourth-generation NHL player, but also the first fourth-generation Montreal Canadien.

Sorry, should have clarified. Howie Morenz' daughter married Bernie Geoffrion. Their son Dan was an NHLer and his son Blake is too. All four generations have now/will soon have played for Montreal.

While we're pointing out Plubby's lack of truthiness, the NHL wasn't formed by a merger. You may be thinking of the NFL.
