2010 Emmy Nominations Announced Today

A fair bit of surprises here, such as House not getting a Best Drama nod. Unsurprisingly Hugh Laurie got one though. Seeing as I think the 2 hour 2010 premiere was stellar in every way, I am not surprised at all. Also go Dexter, go Micahel C Hall, go John Lithgow, and go Jane Lynch.

Here they are.

Guess the Internet campaign to get Zach Gilford ("Friday Night Lights") didn't work out quite as well as the similar campaign to get Betty White on as host of SNL. Shame too since Gilford is a really good actor and deserves some of the publicity (he doesn't get a whole lot of work for some reason). And wow, did the entire cast of Modern Family get nominated?

I am quite disappointed in the lack of love for Community though. :(

Kinda boring list. Disappointed by the fact that Burrell, Stonestreet, and Ferguson got nominated for Best Supporting Actor because whilst all three deserve it, it leaves off so many great actors from other shows in what is easily the most competitive category. I think my Best Supporting category would have been Harris, Burrell, Colfer, Nick Offerman for Parks and Recreation, and Ed Helms for The Office (but really, there are a billion guys who could fit that fifth slot; Stonestreet, Ferguson, Ed O'Neill for Modern Family, Tracy Morgan for 30 Rock, Donald Glover, Chevy Chase, or Danny Pudi for Community, Ken Marino, Ryan Hansen, or Martin Starr for Party Down, Rainn Wilson for The Office, Aziz Ansari for Parks & Rec, etc. etc. etc.).

Anyway, fun-time hilariously hypothetical and uninformed picks behind the spoiler tag.

Seriously, fuck Glee getting nominated over Parks & Rec or Community. And House should be in the Best Drama Series category, as well as Best Directing for a Drama Series and Best Writing for a Drama Series for "Broken."

As much as I'd love Glee to sweep as much as possible, I really, *really* hope that Jane Lynch wins Best Supporting Actress more than any other. Well, that's a lie, because as GoGo quite right pointed out, if Mike O'Malley doesn't win the Guest Actor award then it's an absolute travesty. Also, yay for Chris Colfer getting a nomination, because him and O'Malley pretty much dominated the acting on Glee in the second half of the season. It'll be interesting to see which episodes they put up, actually. I imagine Colfer'll go with "Laryngitis" and O'Malley will go with "Theatricality" but they're both pretty good episodes for both of them.

Gleek-ness over, I think it's a pretty good list of nominations for a change. Here's hoping that Nurse Jackie wins something, Christian Hendricks wins her award, Elizabeth Mitchell wins the guest actress award (if only for her scenes in the LOST finale) and TAR *doesn't* win the best Reality TV award, if only because it's possibly the only thing that'll make the producers realise that the past 2 seasons have been utter snoozefests.

Pretty strong list. Way too much Glee, even though I enjoy the show, but giving it a nomination over Community and Parks & Rec is ridiculous. And Matthew Morrison getting a Best Actor nod is flat-out laughable.

The glaring omission for me is no nod for Nestor Carbonell for the Richard Alpert episode of LOST. That was probably one of the top five episodes in the history of the show.

While I love Friday Night Lights, I really didn't get the Zach Gilford campaign. He does a damn good job on the show, but if anyone from Friday Night Lights deserves a nomination it's Kyle Chandler, so they definitely got it right there. Connie Britton getting a nomination is a good call as well.

And Conan needs to win every award he's nominated for just on general principle.

I really hope Ty Burrell gets the Supporting Actor nod. The man's absolutely hilarious. Honestly, I hope Modern Family wins everything it's nominated for. Except Best Supporting Actress. Jane Lynch obviously deserves that, however much I've fallen out of love with Glee.

Yeah, Matthew Morrison getting nominated is insane. Jane Lynch obviously deserves her nomination and her inevitable win, and Lea Michelle and Chris Colfer are both talented performers both as singers and as actors (Colfer especially deserves praise for being at the level he's at for both when I don't think he's had any serious formal training in either) and they deserve the "it's an honor to have been nominated" thing. Matthew Morrison isn't talentless or anything, certainly not, but he's really the worst part of a lot of episodes, especially in the back nine. Him being nominated means there's no spots for, say, Joel McHale for Community, Thomas Jane for Hung (sort of a middling show but his performance is a big part of why it works), or Zachary Levi for Chuck, and any of those would have been a million times better and more rewarding of talent over trend.

Of course, it was bound to happen. Glee is a force of pop culture right now and the Emmys are going to bow to that.

I love McHale in Community, but he's not really even the funniest part of the show a lot of the time. Abed, Troy and Pierce usually take that crown. But yeah, over Matthew Morrison I'd pick him. Levi has been great but nothing really ground breaking, he hasn't had any particular episode were I was like wowed by his performance. And Thomas Jane is good in Hung, but I think he'll be held back by the fact that the show just all around isn't that great.

I'm expecting the usual suspects to pick up the wins to be honest along with Glee. Which is a shame, because Lost was brilliant this last season and it'll probably lose out to Mad Men, which is easily the most boring and overhyped television show I've ever seen.

I'd like to see Jim Parsons finally pick up an award, but considering his competiton and the fact that the last series of Big Bang Theory wasn't anywhere near as good as the previous means he'll probably miss out. Same goes for NPH.

Also in a minor "are you people even paying attention" complaint, nominating Jon Hamm and Will Arnett for 30 Rock over Michael Sheen (assuming he was submitted, I guess) is dumb. The former appeared in essentially brief cameos, I can't even remember what the latter did anymore but odds are it involved showing up and being Will Arnett.

I'm glad to see Matthew Fox finally get a Best Actor nod as well. I don't think he deserves to win, but definitely nominated, because some of his work on LOST has been insane. I haven't always been the biggest fan of his character but he puts so much emotion into it that it's nice to see him being rewarded along with O'Quinn and Emerson.

Yeah. I do like Arnett and he's pretty awful when he's playing a character that isn't Will Arnett, but Sheen did some great stuff as Wesley in 30 Rock and was one of the few highlights of this last series. It even made me enjoy episodes which were LOL LIZ LEMON IS 40 AND SINGLE. Which I don't usually, because about 80% of episodes now focus on just that.

Conan had this to say on Twitter:

"Congrats to my staff on 4 Emmy nominations. This bodes well for the future of The Tonight Show with Conan."

And hopefully Hugh Laurie will get his Emmy this time.
