Miesha has been leapfrogged for the title shot and Rousey-Holm will be Jan 2nd. Sucks for her as she deserved it more, but it's obviously the better draw despite the fact that Holm will get demolished.

I don't really think it's the better draw, no one is going to care who Ronda fights, she's the draw, not her fight. The only reason this is probably happening is that the UFC isn't ready to give someone a third try at the title, so they don't want a precedent set. Holm could have ten more fights under her belt and Ronda would still crush her. Her opponent doesn't matter unless it's Cyborg, and even then it's just from a drawing perspective.

Rousey is obviously the draw, but Rousey vs 9-0 boxing champion is a lot more marketable than Rousey vs woman she's beaten 2 times already. That's common sense.

No one cares who's she's fighting. Most of her new fans haven't seen her first two fights with Miesha. It doesn't matter, there isn't "more marketable", there's just Rousey and whoever she's going to crush, that's the marketability of her fights.

I love how every opponent she has focuses on Rhonda saying she wants to retire undefeated and all they have is "Uhhh you won't win this time" even though the last 9 opponents have said the same thing and lost in seconds.

It's weird seeing the biggest draws for the UFC being the ones who are most involved with creating larger than life "storylines" - exacerbated by things like rank leapfrogging and an odd rankings system to begin with. Granted this has been very gradual and something that people have seen coming for years now.

It's especially interesting considering Dana writing off pro wrestling considering its very roots.

It's not the only fight announcement that's been made today by the way, Khabib Nurmagomedov is making his return at the TUF 22 finale against Tony Ferguson in December. That's actually turning into a reasonably stacked card, Joe Lauzon vs Evan Dunham, and Mike Pierce vs Ryan LaFlare also.

Michael Bisping fights on the Australia card too, against Robert Whittaker.

Surely you can recognize that the opponent does matter to a degree at the expense of being contrarian. Ronda is obviously the main draw, but it matters. If she fought Betche Correria again right now, the PPV would not do the same numbers because we already no for sure she can crush her, although by your argument it would because everyone is willing to throw down 60 dollars to see the exact same thing because Ronda. Part of the excitement of a new opponent is that you never know who might be her Buster Douglas. Holm has much less of a chance than Tate (who has practically none herself) to actually win, but she does have a championship background and an undefeated record, and that matters from consumer's perspective. Maybe not for you, but you don't speak for everyone.

The majority of Ronda's fans would plop down 60 bucks if her next fight was against Bethe again. Her fights aren't about whether there could be an upset, it's about how long she's going to take to beat her opponent. And her fans have the consumer mentality of "here and now", because they most probably know they're paying 60 bucks for like 2 or 3 minutes of action. They most probably can't tell the difference between her opponents, because her opponents don't get any marketing power behind them. Of course, there will be a few that would rather pay for this fight than a third Miesha fight because they think this is somehow a more competitive fight, but those are just a tiny sliver in the whole pie.

The UFC does try to market her opponents. They don't get a tenth of Ronda's media, but turn it on and you'll hear whatever commentator they have doing their best to hype up whatever can Ronda is about to crush. With Bethe they kept reiterating her undefeated record in an attempt to make her look credible and how she was "the most dangerous fighter she's ever faced", and with Holm they will hype her boxing pedigree (I can hear Dana already....UNDEFEATED BOXING CHAMPION) because they want to persuade the uneducated viewer that there is a chance the fight will be competitive. A fight against someone undefeated is more of a draw than someone she's beaten twice already, once on free TV and the other on a co-main event. Holm was a business decision that will draw better than the alternative. Am I saying a lot of people wouldn't still pay to watch Rousey beat someone a third time? No, as she's the vast majority of the draw and a huge one at that. I'm just saying that the Holm is the most marketable opponent they have, and it does matter. If it didn't, Dana wouldn't waste his breath trying to label every Rousey fight "the biggest fight in women's MMA history" (which he couldn't do with someone she's beaten twice) and instead just throw some 2-3 record can out there for her to eat up and save himself some money/effort. He does this because people want a competitive fight for their money, or at least the illusion of one. They could've given the fight to Amanda Nunes if it was just about some moral stand against offering Miesha a third match, but they give it to the ninth-ranked Holm instead because she's the most marketable opponent they have.

I'll leave at that as this is an extremely trivial thing to waste this much energy debating. :P

So de Lima goes for a kneebar, Krylov defends by grabbing the cage, giving him the back, seconds later he wins by RNC.

Herb Dean warns him but does nothing, that Ratner guy's like "it's a foul but the ref didn't see it so too bad," even though the ref literally says "Krylov pls don't" then does nothing. Facking Bullsheet

Dude gets his first UFC win, knocks out an actual name, then retires in his post fight interview, mental.

Well at least he's going out after a victory instead of waiting for two or three horrible losses that look like he should have retired three fights before.

JDS versus Overeem is finally happening at the UFC Orlando show on Fox. It's not the same fight it was 3 years ago, but damn it, I still can't wait for this one.

ffs I want to go to that show soo bad :(

26 year old Jordan Mein is the latest fighter to retire. Mind you, he's been competing for 10 years and has a 29-10 record, so wear and tear is probably a valid reason.

So Condit-Lawler is off the UFC 193 card in Melbourne.

It's replacement? Ronda versus Holm. Guess they realized they actually needed star power to break that record.

EDIT: Oh, and that Lawler has a thumb injury.
