General Television Thread

"In 1969 JRR Tolkien sold the film rights to his Lord of the Rings fantasy novel for £100,000 to help settle a tax bill.

It meant his family never fully benefited from the astonishing success of Peter Jackson's film trilogy, which generated more than £2 billion at the global box office. His relatives have spent recent years pursuing Warner Bros through the courts for a share of profits and benefits from merchandising.

Now, however, they have linked up with that very company as part of negotiations with Amazon and Netflix for a television version of Lord of the Rings which — if it sees the light of day — would be one of the most expensive productions of all time. Likely beneficiaries include Tolkien's two surviving children: a son, 92, and daughter, 88.

Reports in the US suggest that the Tolkien estate is quoting the streaming companies between $200 million and $250 million for the rights to bring Middle-earth to the small screen. This sum would not include the production costs or actors' fees, which are likely to top $100 million per series, according to industry insiders.

Jeff Bezos, Amazon's chief executive, has taken the highly unusual step of becoming personally involved in the negotiations, according to Variety, the Hollywood trade paper. Bezos is a fan of fantasy fiction and is said to have instructed his Amazon Studios executives to find a Game of Thrones-style blockbuster."

Is there a thread for American Gods? I watched the first two episodes last night, pretty good stuff. A bit lost because I was tired but I was entertained.

I don't think so, which is a shame. It's great.

I have been holding off on watching the finale of Blood Drive for two weeks because I don't want it to end. For a show so dumb that only got one season, I'm really going to miss it once it's over :(

It's like Galavant, where a show is just inherently dumb and ridiculous, but it's just so fun and charming and unlike anything that's on television.

Blood Drive is just unabashedly exploitative and over the top, and the only other thing comparable out there is Ash Vs. Evil Dead, which has way too short episodes/seasons.

I didn't realise that The Detectorists was back on tele. I love this show.

Absolutely loved The Deuce. David Simon delivers, the cast are superb and each episode does a brilliant job of building the world and the ensemble of characters. It was stylish, even in its depiction of the porn industry and managed to be as complex as you'd expect from one of his shows.

Alias Grace is everything I'd hoped for - it's impressive how the show has translated the poetic nature of the book as well as the ever-present sense of foreboding, there's actually something quite gothic about the show, which epitomised in the finale of episode four. I've tried hard not to binge it, but it's becoming more and more tempting.

And finally, I've really enjoyed The Tick. So happy to see Peter Serafenowicz thriving in a lead role.

Oh, also started Mr. Robot with my flatmate. I'm always reluctant to start something so popular when it's a few seasons in (I did the same with Game of Thrones) but the pilot alone was enough to win me over.

Finished Motherland last night. Not at all what I expected when I heard Graham Linehan was involved, but a lovely little show - not laugh-a-minute, but some great character development, and the odd line that did have me howling was always well-earned.

"Take my trousers!"
"No!"
"Go on, you'd do the same for me!"
"I wouldn't".

And, most of all, Diane Morgan is an absolute treasure.
