I was just playing PES and the screen froze for a second before it reset and the dreaded orange light appeared. Now when I turn it on, the red light flashes.

It's the old 60GB model and it's way out of warranty - is there anything I can do now, or am I completely buggered until I buy a new one?

I think you can pay Sony an extra fee to get a new warranty on it, and they'll fix it.

Pay Sony $120 for a new one or try and be a handyman and fix it yourself for a couple of months. Just remember to back up your saves after you do that. That was my mistake.

Is there an easy way I can get the disc out or get any of the data off the hard drive?

Can't get anything off the hard drive cause they reformat themselves whenever they get put into a new Playstation but it's easy enough to open up the system to get the disc out. Tons of help videos and stuff on it throughout the interwebs.

You might not need to open up the system, to get your disc back. Try flipping it upside down and holding the eject "button" as you turn it on. Works maybe 25% of the time for me when I'm trying to receive discs for customers.

And it looks like I'm pricing up a new one over the weekend. One positive is that I'll finally have something bigger than 60GB.

I have no mechanical ability and I managed to get inside of it. Trust me, it's super easy.

Oh, I don't mean that - I meant that I tried the way Dragsy said before I left for work this morning. I'm sure getting the disc won't be a problem.

I can get the 320GB model for around £210 at Tesco, so unless I find it cheaper online later, I'll more than likely pick it up in the morning.

I fixed my 60gig by following a youtube tutorial involving a heatgun and stripping the console down to the motherboard.

It worked again for about 3 months then I had to do it again. After about a year it died for good.

I found the same 320GB model from the online Zavvi store within ebay for £200 ...I'll look into that later and make sure it's brand new. Pretty sure it is.
