Even though the character is a shell of its former self, Homer Simpson. I don't think any one character has had so many consistently funny and geuinely sentimental moments (at least for a time). I'm sure there are other characters that could be well argued as being better, but Homer always hits the right note for me.

Currently though, I am really enjoying Locke (Lost). The development of his character and how his past experiences have dictated his current actions making him incredibely compelling.

Homer Simpson

GOB Bluth (but with honourable mentions for Michael, Tobias and George-Michael)

Karl Kennedy (Neighbours. Plenty of other good characters over the years)

Tony Almeida (24. Tony>Jack)

Picard and Data from Star Trek:TNG

I watch way too much TV, so there are millions more, but thats just a starter list.

I echo the Homer Simpson love. Who doesn't love him? He is an everyman. And the episode about the missing pictures of Maggie always gets me. 'Do it for her'. I love it.

Fry from Futurama. I just love him, he reminds me of myself sometimes. And he too can be sweet in episodes like 'The Sting' and 'Jurrasic Bark'.

Dave Lister. Man, he might as well be me. Thats it.

Probably Gil Grissom. It seems like there's more depth to his character than any of the characters in any CSI.

Monk, too.. and House.

Is it wrong that I have a soft spot for Porkchop from Doug?

Also add to this post Kryten.

No problem with Porkchop. Skeeter and Porkchop were my two favorite characters from that show.

Obviously, my list is skewed towards comedies and animation, since that's practically all the fiction-based television shows I watch.

10. Bender Bending Rodriguez (John DiMaggio, Futurama)

9. Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie, House)

8. Master Shake (Dana Snyder, Aqua Teen Hunger Force)

7. Balki Bartokomous (Bronson Pinchot, Perfect Strangers)

5. Martin Crane (John Mahoney, Frasier)

4. Dave Lister (Craig Charles, Red Dwarf)

3. George Castanza (Jason Alexander, Seinfeld)

Random favorites, I suppose.

Ari Gold (Entourage) - The guy is an agency prick with fast-talking lines and ridiculous promises. His lines make Entourage what it is...CUNTMUSCLE.

Johnny Drama (Entourage) - Even more so than Ari, Drama makes the shows by showing both idiocy and pensions for fighting. His moments are often the most hilarious moments on the show (think: Seth Green fight, feud with James Woods, 9-Iron moment)

Dr. John "J.D." Dorian (Scrubs) - While I should show my love for Dr. Cox, I think Zach Braff's character is the most underrated on the show for how well Braff plays the everyman. His character is probably the most relatible on the show for his wide-eyed inexperience and growth into a solid doctor. Sure, like the show itself, he does off-the-wall things, but at the end of the day, he reminds us of first experiences and growth in anything.

I have more, which I'll add to later...

I think I could pick any "non throw-away" character from either Buffy or Angel because they all have something great about them.

Wesley Wyndam-Pryce (Angel) - For the reasons everybody else has stated basically. Wesley has got to be the character that has underwent to biggest growth out of any character I can think of on any TV show.

Captain Malcolm Reynolds (Firefly) - He's Han Solo from A New Hope. Only more of a bastard. He's just such a great character and greatly brought to life by a the legend that is Nathan Fillion.

Those are my two favourite characters, but I can't go without mentioning these.

Miles O'Brien - Star Trek: DS9

Angel - Angel

Xander Harris - Buffy

Lorne - Angel

Daniel Jackson - Stargate SG1

Kara 'Starbuck' Thrace - Battlestar Galactica

Sheriff Don Lamb (Veronica Mars)

You would put Lamb over Veronica and Keith? Wow.

Along with the Mars duo, I'd also say Bender, Tony Almeida and Jack Bauer, Ken Titus, perhaps Stan Smith from American Dad and Dave Gold from The War at Home.

Guest Bosstown Boy

Eric Cartman from South Park, or maybe even Butters from South Park. I also liked Patrick from Spongebob Squarepants when I was younger. While on my animation kick, Heffer from Rocko's Modern Life was the shit too. As for non-animated people, Dr. Gregory House is the man on House.
