I'm wanting to create some graphics and banners for an upcoming diary, I was wondering what program everyone uses to create their own and how to go about doing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Adobe Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. The Resource thread has some great links to helpful tutorials.

Hope your diary won't be showing up for a LONG time because it takes quite a while to produce some decent stuff.

I disagree. All I did was read a buncha tutorials and get a few brushes, and managed to get the hang of it within a couple of days. Granted, it's going to take you much longer if you plan on doing more complicated stuff, but making dairy banners isn't too hard, considering they've even got pre-cut images and whatnot.
