2024 Copa América

Recommended Posts

Absolute fucking chaos in Miami for the Copa Final. Thousands crushed through the gates and turnstiles without tickets. Gates were eventually closed to everyone, players off the field. Kickoff delayed twice, now to 845 (KO was scheduled for 8), was announced that gates wouldn't open until everyone without a ticket was out of the stadium. About 30 minutes later, they've now just opened all gates and aren't even checking tickets. All this has been happening in a brutal heat wave, in Miami.

This is entirely on CONEMBOL. I've seen a lot of very ignorant takes blaming America for this, but this is entirely on CONEMBOL. There's been reports already before today about CONEMBOL doing nowhere near enough with their communication with police and stadiums. It was a disaster. Over 7,000 people entered without tickets. No one was checked by security ever so who knows if there's weapons in the stadium. There's been pictures of people having glass liquor bottles in the stadium. There's still thousands illegally in the stadium now, 105 minutes into the match, which started 75 minutes late.

Messi hurt his ankle before HT, played on. They then over watered the pitch before the second half. Messi slipped from it and did his hamstring, had to be forced off. But for those who want to see just how swollen his ankle was...

Vargas will have nightmares every night for the rest of his life about that goal. Goes right in between his hands, right over his head. Worse yet, it looked like it deflects off both a glove AND his face before going in.

There was a lot of conversation over the grass this tournament. And it isn't going to quiet down over the next 2 years. The security I would assume is better with FIFA running the show - these stadiums host all sorts of large-scale events largely without incident.

The US bid team for the World Cup has previously already published security and ticketing plans for each game/stadium and it showed a much more (and better) organised way of doing things than whatever the fuck it was Comnebol was doing here.

This is a false comparison in a lot of ways, and one that's gained a lot of traction online that somehow the United States is at fault for this. This is not actually true.

CONEMBOL was in charge of the tournament. They were responsible for coordination with the stadiums, local police, determining where the initial security checkpoints will be at (including having them much farther away from the gates, which will prevent a lot of what happened at the Final), how much security/police should be there, etc.

The grass conversation is yet another one of people who don't know/want to know that there's no correlation here. CONEMBOL had grass laid down over the turf in most stadiums, which is the major reason why the pitches were so bad. This will not be the case for the World Cup. FIFA will take charge of all stadiums 1-2 months before the World Cup. All stadiums will have seats moved when needed to make sure that there aren't any narrow pitches. They also will not be planting grass over turf. The turf will be gone, and the grass will be done the proper way.
