It's not actually that strange at all, with where things are at. He was holding out hope for Chelsea, so he turned down Saudi, but Chelsea couldn't get the money right or a bid accepted, depending on who you believe. Saudi was no longer an option, but Napoli froze him out of the club. He wasn't registered for the league. So it was either pay him huge money to train on his own and not play for four additional months, or get him somewhere that was still open and not lose all that money while also devaluing your prized asset.

Everything I saw said the sticking point was his wages (he wanted to stay at £300kpw+ or whatever he was on at Napoli).
