Just finished off Granblue Fantasy: ReLink. I feel like this is a game I should have absolutely loved, it had some of my favorite things: anime aesthetic, fun combat, larger than life boss battles, epic orchestral soundtrack for said boss battles, the allies you've made along the way helping you during the climax (my favorite trope of all time), the heroic emotional sacrifice of a companion (second favorite trope.... usually)..... but it was lacking.

First off, the length... I think I completed it in less than 15 hours (not a bad thing for most games), and for a grand epic tale it just fucks with the pacing. You're plodding along at the beginning fighting goblins (as you do in fantasy games), and then shortly after that you're fighting gods. At least in Final Fantasy or Persona you have to work up to that point. And then the story... it's nothing special, and it kinda feels like you're thrown right in the middle of what's going on, expected to know all these random terms. It feels like jumping into Mass Effect 3 without playing the first two. I think it's because it's originally a Gacha game? But I could have sworn reviews said you didn't need to know anything... that felt like a lie. And they also throw WAYYYY too many characters at you. At the beginning of the game you have like 6 or 7 different characters that you can have in your party (and play as, each with their own different move sets), and with the short-run time of the game it doesn't feel like you really have a chance to get to know these characters, so I basically stuck with the Captain for 60% of the game. And then you can unlock additional characters who have absolutely no bearing on the story. And the skill points you earn on level up are shared between all your character... bleh.

This feels like a gacha game, sold at the price of a regular game. There IS good here, but there's so much that drags it down.

I had always assumed (from a distance) it was a gacha game, tbh.

And I guess when the main selling point is cramming as many pretty/cool-looking characters in as possible, "getting to know" them is probably viewed as unnecessary bloat.

Sunset Overdrive is the first of hopefully many games I complete on the ROG Ally. Fun from start to finish. Great humour in the story, and the gameplay/weapons you use and upgrade are awesome. Wish I'd played it sooner.

Got the likes of Far Cry 5 and Sleeping Dogs installed too, but I finished those on console years ago, so may opt for another Game Pass title next while I still have my Ultimate. I did play the first half hour or so of Sleeping Dogs and it runs beautifully.

Was playing Steamworld Heist 2 as a computer game when my family doesn't let me on the TV. It was pretty fun! Turn-based, 2D, strategic combat with fun designed characters and classes. The story was whatever, but the gameplay is where it shines. That and the bar music, which is written by the amazingly named band Steam Powered Giraffe.

Well, here's a (stupid) story.

Bought this for the child a little while back because she wanted it after seeing adverts with all the "ooh play with Disney characters, decorate things, etc." As it turned out, it contains too much requirement to read character dialogue and she quickly lost interest (hell, it's rare for her to sit through a 90 minute movie all the way through).

One person who didn't lose interest was her mum, who is easily addicted to games that are like 95% fetch quest like this is. She ended up playing it A LOT. To the extent that the child got extremely annoyed by it. So when the child came to visit me, she brought the game with her and asked me to please not bring it back. 😅

And me, in my naivety, looked at this game and thought "it's a stupid grind but it's an easy grind, I'll platinum this just for the hell of it".

What I failed to appreciate was HOW grindy some of the trophies were. So yes, I did platinum it through sheer force of will, but I'm not proud of it. Never attempt this.

finished my Let's Play watching of Parasite Eve last night. I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the characters and desperately want to see this get made as a big time Amazon or Netflix mini-series, haha! I thought the game play was pretty unique for a PS1 JRPG. Really enjoyed the story pacing and the unique way the used the world map and the "dungeon" maps. All in all, a great experience. Makes me wished I had picked it up back in the day.

  1. Mega Man Battle Network 1
  2. Paper Mario
  3. This Bed We Made
  4. Parasite Eve*

* = Watched

(Author's Note: I am aware that "I" did not actually complete this game on my own, but it was a big investment of time and for many games this is the best way that I am able to enjoy and engage with them - so I am counting it on my list haha)

Parasite Eve is one of the games I want to be remade the most. There IS a game coming out soon in a similar vein: .45 PARABELLUM BLOODHOUND.

Oh nice - going to add that to my games to play or watch list

I didn't just play 'Specialist' some 30 times in a row in order to grind enough cash to buy all the crappy accessories in the shop. Nope. Not me.

Thanks to Steam family sharing, I was able to play In Stars And Time, a black and white turn-based RPG about time loops. It's funny and emotional and queer as all heck. I really loved this game... except the middle bits. Lots of backtracking (and backtracking costs arbitrary points that you get by battling, but by the halfway mark, you don't really NEED to do battles anymore) and scenes not triggering because I did them in the wrong order. If you play this, I recommend going in blind until you get stuck, and then use a walkthrough until you hit act 4 or 5.

Finished both story modes in WWE 2k24 so I'm officially done playing that for the year. Does this count? Really enjoyed Undisputed which i played as Dustin Rhodes. Unleashed, played as Steph De Landa, not so much.

Foamstars I tried, just not my thing.

AEW Fight Forever I really wanted to like, played about 30 minutes of and don't want to bother.

Streets Of Rage 4 was a blast! Had a ton of fun with a buddy of mine knocking it out couch co-op and for those couple hours kinda felt like a kid again. We even busted out some Mtn Dew.

Mortal Kombat 1, I really enjoy the storyline of all these games and will always check out the new ones every time. I know once the story is over there's not much else I want to do with them. Looking forward to the upcoming DLC but will wait for a discount.

God Of War Ragnarok, I'm really glad I pushed through. The first half or more were kind of slow. Maybe too slow. I almost gave up on it a few times but had the urge to try and finish. The plot twist of Tyr was fantastically done and then rest of the game really picked up nice from there.

2024 Games Complete:

1. Spider-Man 2

2. Streets of Rage 4

3. Mortal Kombat 1

4. God Of War Ragnarok

5. WWE 2k24

Add Virtual Pro Wrestling 2 to the list.

Royal Road Succession is the game's version of Road to WrestleMania.  I suppose the main difference is that you only wrestle once per card, thank God, unlike WM2K, where you'd have to defend your titles at the Big Five, and then have to take part in (and win) the Royal Rumble if you wanted to sucessfully complete the mode. The annoyances is you are put into the various AJPW tournaments, but it's still not as bad as going through a Royal Rumble. The one rumble event the game has was more like ten man and allowed pins and submissions, so there's that.

Overall, I think that the real flaw of the game -- and it's a good game, don't get me wrong, probably the best wrestling game on the N64, is that there's almost too much cooking going on in the pot. Ok, so we have the biggest stars of AJPW in the late 90s, and non-licensed versions of various legends and wrestlers from not only NJPW, but shoot-style and shoot/MMA promotions. But none of the MMA stuff is a factor in the career mode unless it's on the wrestler you picked or made. And very seldom did I see a non AJPW guy. So, I feel like having all those other wrestlers is a bit of a waste.

Still, not a bad game at all.

Just rolled credits (and what a credits scene it was) on Astro Bot! What a fantastic game that may be one of the best platformers of all time. This game will be ranking highly on my (and likely everyone's) GotY 2024. The music is on point, the graphics and animation delightful and expressive, the gameplay is top tier and the boss fights are memorable. I finished the game finding 246/300 of the bots, and likely just under half of the galaxy coins. It might be one I come back to try the platinum on.
