I think when you consider the ball wasn't moving all that much as well as the expected position rule interpretation the official was fair not to rule a handball. I assume VAR looked at it and didn't feel it was, as they say, an obvious error.

It hit Chiellini's arm as he went to ground. Knew nothing about it, never a pen. And I have Spain in one of my sweeps.

I don't think the ball's gone inside the Spanish penalty area (except for pass backs) since Berardi's missed chance 35 minutes ago.

And now we're time-wasting for penalties. What an embarrassment.

True, but this one was pretty clear. I think they key factor is he didn't deflect or block a pass/shot and no one was challenging him for possession, plus he was pretty blind to it until it touched him and he immediately tries to move away from the ball.

Plus, he's Chiellini.

 

 

Italy are going for penalties then? They are truly parking a tank in front of goal, and their box has become a pinball machine.

Italy have no choice but to try and hold on for penalties. They made subs to hold the lead, lost the lead, and now they're just gassed. It's not the most exciting stuff after what was a great 90 minutes.
