  1. Not to rouse the Whedonites on another maybe (we are nothing if not an excitable bunch), but Joss said he'd love to do a Harry Potter movie. He also said he refused to watch any of the movies until all seven books had been released as "she writes better movies than anybody shoots", so this was going to be the only movie out of the series he could logically direct anyways. But Cuaron would be great too; he's one of the most visually exciting directors currently going and gave us arguably the best Potter film so far. Just wanted to say that I loved this book, and it was arguably my favorite of the series. The people who gripe about Rowling's prose are probably right, at least for the latter installments. But her storytelling and depth of characterization are absolutely wonderful and, regardless of the marketing, resulted in an incredibly infectious series of books. The Harry Potter of the screen may be slightly wooden (do as much to the screen writing as it was to Mr. Radcliffe's acting, which is better than some give credit for), but the Potter of the page is the entirely sympathetic and ultimately heroic character that motivated 325 million books sold worldwide. It's one of those iconic stories that I feel will probably survive the test of time: at least long enough for Hollywood to ruin it the second time around 30 years from now.

No, they haven't kicked ass SINCE we were born. An important distinction. :P

  3. They're both foreign born Canadians. Colin Mochrie was born in Scotland.
  4. I didn't peg you as a metal fan, but yes it's pretty decent.
  5. Since I didn't see it mentioned anywhere else, the new August Burns Red album is fucking awesome.
  6. ASSBERT! hihi

  7. I think Leeds could beat the best MLS team out there. There, I said it.
  8. Okay the first pilot leak has happened, and it's Reaper. And it ROCKS. Bret Harrison is great as always in the lead role, Tyler Labine is hilarious in support and Ray Wise is so awesome as the devil. After watching season 3 of Veronica Mars and how it went downhill, this is a more than adequate replacement. Now comes the arduous task of waiting until September for it to debut. Hopefully more leaks will sustain me, because summer TV right now is absolute dogshit.
  9. Luckily I'm feeling numb to idiocy right now, so it's like these nominations never happened. Only real bright side is Neil Patrick Harris finally getting his nomination for "How I Met Your Mother". And it seems obvious to me that they need to start a Best New Series category, considering the fact that a show needs to jump the shark before it gets any recognition 'round these parts. And you missed copying drama series, where the nominations were: Drama Series The Sopranos House Grey's Anatomy Heroes Boston Legal House and Heroes would be a bright side, if they had the slightest chance of winning.

  12. If anyone gets 50, help a brother out. Sounds like an amazing piece of music.
  13. They had a big fucking mountain to overcome with getting this book down to film-able length, and with a few hiccups I'd say they did a really good job. The "mistakes" I've seen referred to so far I'd say are only down to personal taste as to what was important about the book. Keep in mind that writer Michael Goldenberg had JK Rowling's hints to emphasize the important points to set them up for future films. If Trelawney's role in the prophecy was under emphasized, maybe there's a reason for that. Neville taking over some of Dobby's plot points probably has to do with the fact that the character was never once that important after the second book beyond Hermione's SPEW campaign, and was easily substituted. My only issue (and one I can't at all fault them for), is that with all they had going on, the movie may have moved too fast for some of the non-readers. The Order wasn't particularly well introduced because of this, and I suppose you could argue that the Cho-Harry relationship was really glossed over, although I'm guessing that's probably another example of a storyline minimized for lack of importance. But the 3 kids have come great lengths since the first movie, and with all they had going on it's hard to say that the film was ever boring. All in all my second favorite of the flicks, behind Cuaron's Azkaban, which was really something special.
  14. This is about a week old now, but if you were a fan of the quality NBC pumped out in the past few weeks there might still be hope for you. Kevin Reilly, fired from 4th place NBC, has been hired to RUN 1st place FOX. FOX Chairman Peter Ligouri worked with Reilly at FX, where they produced shows like Nip/Tuck, The Shield and Rescue Me. This could be great. Now Reilly's got a mandate for quality and some monster hits to cross promote with.
  15. There have been rumours of creative differences between Patinkin and the producers for a while now, so it doesn't surprise me that they say it's not a salary issue. Some funny bits coming out of the NBC TCA too. Asked about Reilly's departure, Graboff said that Reilly wasn't fired at all, but in fact left because he felt that he'd done all he could at NBC. This produced a bigger laugh than most NBC sitcoms. Later on they were asked about hiring Isaiah Washington, Silverman actually said that he hadn't heard about Washington's controversy at "Grey's Anatomy". Seriously, who hasn't heard about that? I guess it's part of the job for NBC execs to spin more shamelessly than the rest. Like when Reilly said that Scrubs didn't make the schedule because "Zach Braff was busy", or when Don Ohlmeyer said he fired Norm MacDonald simply because he "wasn't funny".
  16. Right above T.I.'s new song, too, ouch.

    Reggie...NO!

Shit. Reggie was awesome. Every album, while completely unique in their own right, had its charm, and it's a shame to hear we're not gonna get another one. But hey, 4 for 4 is pretty solid, so at least it won't have been a side-project that overstayed its welcome. Maybe he'll get bored after a while and come back.
  18. Art almost always takes a back seat in the mainstream. Criticizing rap as being "inartistic" as if it's somehow the exception to the rule is silly. It's not like Hinder and James Blunt represent the apex of artistic expression either. Look at your less mainstream stuff: El P, Del Tha Funky Homosapien, MC Abdominal, Busdriver, Gangstarr, Consequence, M.I.A. Hell even in the mainstream: Kanye, Lupe, Lil Wayne, T.I., The Roots, Outkast, k-os (in Canada), Dizzee Rascal (in the UK), Nas, Common, Jay-Z, Eminem, D-12, Jadakiss, CRS, The Clipse and even A Tribe Called Quest, who I believe are working on another album. Those names are all off the top of my head and if called upon, I could probably think of countless others. And the other stuff... whatever. I mean, it may not read like Shakespearean poetry or anything but it's catchy, and that's really what it's made for. It's the mainstream; every genre has its inexplicable successes.
  19. Canada's slim chances just got even slimmer. We now need to beat Congo by 3 goals, never mind the fact that we haven't scored a goal this tournament. But good on Gambia; that was a great effort.

    Live Earth

Wait I wasn't following this closely. Did Al Gore just declare?

    Live Earth

I'm paraphrasing, but I thought Noel Gallagher's comments on last week's Russell Brand show were particularly succinct. Something to the effect of the Chinese are the problem, and the odds of Hu Jintao seeing Maroon 5 and having a change of heart aren't great.
